QR codes in windows: manage reflections and glossy materials

A sharp file can become difficult to read behind glass. Lighting, the passer-by’s reflection and placement all matter after generation. Check the right choice on location with a sample of the intended finish.

Look from the visitor’s position

Download the field test sheet (A4 PDF).

Stand where a visitor will actually stop. Can they bring their phone close without an obstacle? Is the code visible without bending down or stretching? A code placed very low, behind a handle or in a busy poster can be awkward to use even when its file is correct.

Inspect the window at relevant times: direct sunlight, indoor lights on and evening. These are conditions to compare, not guaranteed outcomes. Note where reflections hide the pattern and look for a more consistent position before redesigning everything.

Keep the background independent of the window

Keep a light opaque background and the QR code’s entire margin. A transparent sticker lets the scene behind it affect the design: objects, decoration and lighting then become part of the composition. Ask the manufacturer how the background will be produced on the chosen material.

Do not place a seam, curve or fold across the grid. A matte finish is worth comparing with a glossy one, but Qurl does not publish rankings based on material testing. Request two samples with identical size and content to assess your own situation.

Run a comparable test

  1. First check that the original file decodes correctly.
  2. Mount each sample flat in the intended position.
  3. Try from the same position using the same devices.
  4. Repeat under the different lighting conditions observed.
  5. Record whether the visitor has to move substantially to avoid a reflection or come impractically close.

Keep a simple record: material, finish, dimensions, position, time, device and result. A photo helps you reproduce the setup but does not replace a reading test.

Plan maintenance and another way in

Choose placement and finish from these observations. If reading remains unreliable, enlarge or move the code, or provide the material inside as well. Check again after replacing the vinyl, cleaning or changing the display.

Add a short address and a clear action, such as “View opening hours”. Visitors can then find the information without a successful scan. See alternatives to scanning and unreadable QR code diagnosis.
