Place a QR code on a business card or flyer

On a small card, a QR code has to share space with a name, contact details and a clear action. Reserve its position when laying out the design: shrinking it at the end to make it fit is a poor sizing method.

Choose one main action

A business card might offer to save a contact or open a portfolio. A flyer might lead to registration or a product page. Choose the priority journey and write a specific caption: “View the portfolio” is more useful than “Scan me”.

If you add several QR codes, separate them clearly and name each destination. On a small item, a page collecting the links may be easier to understand. It does add another tap, so check that the main action remains easy to find on a phone.

Separate the quiet zone from the trim margin

The light border around the grid protects readability. The printer’s safe margin protects elements near the cut. They serve different purposes: keep the complete QR code inside the safe area specified by the print template.

In these templates, the QR occupies a 33 mm square including its margin, on an 85 × 55 mm card or a 105 × 148 mm flyer. These are layout choices, not universal minimum sizes. Other content may produce a denser grid and need more space.

Two templates to adapt

The templates use the same fictional QR pointing to https://example.org/menu, a readable address and the wording “Paper menu available on request”.

Open the SVG in your layout software. Replace the entire QR group with your export, then update the address and caption together. Keep the proportions and white margin. Adapt the paper alternative to what your venue actually offers.

The PDF places the template at actual size on an A4 sheet, with crop marks and a 50 mm reference line. Use it for a test print at 100%. The files have no bleed: ask your print provider for their specifications before a professional print run.

Insert the right file without distortion

Use SVG if your layout software handles it correctly. Otherwise choose a PNG with enough resolution for the intended size. Lock the proportions, keep full opacity and use a solid background. Avoid screenshots of the generator preview.

Qurl’s exported PDF is a QR output, not a business-card template with bleed ready for every printer. Supply your layout according to the printer’s format, trim and export instructions. See the differences in the PNG, SVG and PDF guide.

Review a proof at actual size

  1. Print the layout at 100%, without automatic scaling.
  2. Measure the complete square and check the caption.
  3. Read the code on the proof, then check the resulting page.
  4. Confirm that cuts, folds and finishing do not interfere with the code.
  5. Keep a readable address leading to the same destination.

This method prepares your check; it does not replace the supplier’s proof. For a series of materials, use the pre-print checklist.
