WhatsApp adds QR sharing for Channels

A WhatsApp Channel can now be discovered through a QR code. In its 9 April update, the messaging service announces a unique code that admins can share to open their Channel directly. It provides an entry point for readers who discover a publisher, organisation or creator outside the app.

Direct access to the Channel

WhatsApp presents the QR code among several Channel updates: video notes, voice transcripts and a new sharing method. For admins, it offers direct access to their Channel without asking readers to find it by name in the app.

The code is associated with a specific destination. Readers can discover the Channel and decide whether to follow it. Scanning and choosing to follow remain separate steps: displaying a QR code alone does not create an audience.

A Channel distributes updates

Channels let admins distribute text, photos, videos and other updates to followers. They sit in the Updates tab, separate from personal conversations. An association, publisher or club can use one to offer a stream of information inside WhatsApp.

This differs from a group discussion. In its introduction to Channels, WhatsApp also says followers’ phone numbers are not revealed to the admin or other followers. Publishers still need to choose carefully what information they post.

The same pattern can lead to a different action

A Channel QR opens that Channel. It does not serve the same purpose as a WhatsApp Web sign-in QR, which is part of linking a device. Our WhatsApp Web article describes that other process. The symbol’s square appearance does not identify the expected action.

Before continuing, check the displayed Channel name and description. If a poster promises an information feed but the screen asks to link a device, stop and find the official access route. The QR security guide helps assess this mismatch between promise and action.

Useful sharing on paper too

On a poster, programme or counter, a QR code can lead to an organisation’s next updates. The Channel name and a clear instruction give the scan a purpose. A label such as “Follow our updates on WhatsApp” is more explicit than an isolated code.

The admin should retrieve the correct access from their Channel and check the destination before distributing the material. The guide to QR captions helps phrase the instruction, while the card and flyer guide helps position it in print. Qurl can create a link QR; it does not create the Channel or manage followers.
