2020: Chrome offers QR codes to share a page

A page open on a computer, a phone beside it: a QR code can save typing the address again. On 25 August 2020, Google presented this option in Chrome. This milestone helps explain link sharing and its limits: the phone still needs access to the destination.

25 August 2020: an announcement about sharing links

In its post of 25 August 2020, Google presented several Chrome updates. The URL-sharing section described creating a QR code to scan or download on Android, as well as a desktop rollout through the address bar.

Google noted that features could take time to reach every browser. This was therefore an announcement, not an identical availability date for every device. On 28 September 2020, another post also announced QR generation for sharing pages in Chrome on iOS.

What moves from one screen to another

A web page QR code provides its address. It is not a copy of the text, photos or documents on display. Opening the link on the phone remains a new visit to the destination.

This matters if the page requires a connection, an account or access rights. A QR code does not transfer the session open on the computer or turn a private page into a public resource. Before sharing, choose the page the recipient is actually allowed to view.

The guide to how a QR code works separates the data read from the application’s action. To inspect an address already encoded, the Qurl QR reader lets you start from an image.

A fictional workshop: finding the right sheet on a phone

Imagine an association running a repair workshop. The facilitator is viewing the public “Prepare your bike” sheet on a computer and wants participants to open it on their phones. She chooses that sheet’s address rather than her administration area or a search result.

The QR code comes with a clear action: “Open the preparation sheet”. The team also keeps a readable address for people who prefer not to scan. It then checks that the sheet opens without the facilitator’s account and reads well on a small screen.

This scenario is fictional. For your own journey, the guide to QR captions helps state the action and the wrong destination guide helps choose the right page level.

From a one-off share to a lasting medium

A QR code shown for a few seconds and one printed for several months need different follow-up. Before printing, decide who maintains the page, which address will remain in place and how to correct information that becomes wrong.

To create your own link QR code, Qurl’s URL type starts from the chosen address. Keep the source layout file and a readable alternative. The guide to a QR code’s lifespan explains why the symbol can stay the same while its destination changes.

Reading an old announcement with the right context

Google help consulted today still describes creating a QR code to share a page, with device-specific journeys. Its current menus do not prove the exact 2020 interface; check the help for your version if you are looking for the command.

This milestone shows QR codes becoming part of everyday link sharing. It guarantees neither an old button’s availability nor access to every page. The 2015 WhatsApp Web retrospective presents another QR role, pairing a browser: similar symbols can trigger different actions.
